Sri Lanka HFH Delegation Monaragala, Sri Lanka - July 9-24, 2005
Trip Description

This delegation's build location was at Monaragala, an affiliate a small distance from the coast affected by the Tsunami in December. The volunteers sent on this delegation were of varying construction skills and experience.

Even though the delegation did not build in the Tsunami area, they helped Sri Lanka deal with the results of the devastation, because many people have had to seek refuge and find housing in other parts of the country as a result of the disaster. This Global Village delegation served as an opportunity for volunteers to be in solidarity with the victims of the natural disaster and help them re-build their homes and lives.
About Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, a small island nation, is one of Asia's most densely populated countries. A decade of civil war has devastated trade and production rates, destroyed a once flourishing tourist trade and displaced more than 700,000 people.

Sri Lankan families who have neither the capital nor the credit available to buy or rent adequate shelter in safe areas are forced to live in dwellings that are unable to withstand the annual monsoon seasons. They also lack access to clean water or sanitation systems.

HFH Sri Lanka was formed in 1994 and has worked toward reconciliation between religious groups, uniting people in the common cause of building houses for those in need.
